You may be familiar with the traditional story, we will be performing the play in Modern English! to make it as accessible as possible for students and to give the story a modern twist to dramatise the many serious topics and themes for discussion.
A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself.
The main theme of Macbeth — the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints — finds its most powerful expression in the play's two main characters. Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement. The moral of the story is that power corrupts, and we do have control over our own lives. Macbeth decides that he does deserve to be king, because the witches put the idea in his head. Yet the ambition was already there. Shakespeare wrote the play as a tribute to King James I.
Macbeth is a spooky horror story set in Scotland. There are gory bits. There are witches and spooky visions. Macbeth and his wife commit so many horrible crimes that towards the end even Lady Macbeth goes mad with the horror of it all. What was it all for? The couple were power hungry and happy to kill their friends and family to fulfil their ambition to become royalty.
The production will have plenty of action and we feel this will be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their language ability.
